Iowa Cubs take home an opening day win to kick off 2025 season
The Iowa Cubs opened their home season Friday by beating the Omaha Storm Chasers.
The first pitch was thrown at 7:08 p.m. at Principal Park in downtown Des Moines. The final score was 6-3.
Unusually warm temperatures topped 80 degrees during the game.
I-Cubs assistant general manager Randy Wehofer says there's always a special feeling in the air on opening day.
"Baseball is full of ups and downs, players will come and go, the season will have the story of itself — but that freshness, the newness, the possibility, the hope of what is to come — it's just part of the opening of every new season," Wehofer said.
I-Cubs superfan Stu Bassman said he's only missed one opening day game since 1983. Despite the earlier-than-usual opening, Bassman said the weather was perfect.
"When they open up in April, it can be a little cold. I've been down here in insulated hunting outfits with a blanket, so it can be bad," Bassman said. "You live in Iowa, you go through the bad weather, and you get a break in the weather like this, you've got baseball season starting. It's exciting."
