STARTS NOW. IT WAS OPENING DAY AT THE BALLPARK. THE IOWA CUBS STARTED THE SEASON OFF RIGHT, BEATING THE OMAHA STORM CHASERS 6 TO 3. BOY, IT WAS A SWEET START TO THE SEASON. KCCI’S PEPPER PURPURA WAS THERE AS FANS PACKED THE STANDS. WELL, IT’S HARD TO HAVE ASKED FOR A BETTER OPENING DAY THAN THIS ONE. THE GORGEOUS WEATHER, BUT LONG BEFORE THERE WERE ANY FANS IN THE STANDS, A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE WORKING HARD TO GET THIS PLACE BACK IN BASEBALL SHAPE. ALL THROUGHOUT PRINCIPAL PARK, YOU CAN REALLY FEEL THE TENSION IN THE OPENING DAY. BUT BEFORE THE FIRST PITCH CAN CROSS HOME PLATE, THERE’S WORK TO DO. BEER WAS FLOWING AND CONCESSIONS ALREADY ON THE GRILL. BECAUSE THIS STADIUM NEEDS TO BE REAWAKENED FROM ITS OFFSEASON SLUMBER. YEAH, THERE’S A LOT OF HUSTLE AND BUSTLE THAT GOES ON AT THE BALLPARK, BUT WE ALL ENJOY WHAT WE DO, AND WE’RE VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS ORGANIZATION AND REALLY FEEDING INTO THE COMMUNITY OF DES MOINES. YOU CAN TAKE THAT WITH YOU, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THIS YEAR, THE FIRST GAME FEELS A LITTLE DIFFERENT. A LOT OF TIMES, OPENING GAMES ARE NOT VERY NICE WEATHER. USUALLY ON OPENING DAY THE WEATHER IS NOT TOO GREAT, BUT WE GOT PRETTY LUCKY TODAY AT HOME WITH FIREWORKS. ON A NIGHT LIKE TONIGHT, IT’S PERFECT. MAKING THE FIRST GAME ALL THE MORE ENJOYABLE. WE HAD A BREAK IN THE WEATHER LIKE THIS AND YOU GOT BASEBALL SEASON STARTING, WHICH WE’RE ALL WAITING FOR, AND IT’S EXCITING. AND ONE OTHER FIRST HAPPENED IN THIS OPENING DAY. THOSE FIREWORKS ARE I-CUBS ARE KNOWN FOR ON THOSE FRIDAY NIGHT HOME GAMES IN DES MOINES. PEPPER PAPURA KCCI EIGHT NEWS. IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. THOSE FIREWORKS ARE AWESOME. NOW, THIS IS THE FIRST OF THREE GAMES VERSUS THE OMAHA STORM CHASERS. TOMORROW’S GAME IS AT 308. FIRST PITCH FOR SUNDAY’S GAME IS 108.

The final score was 6-3.Unusually warm temperatures topped 80 degrees during the game. I-Cubs assistant general manager Randy Wehofer says there's always a special feeling in the air on opening day."Baseball is full of ups and downs, players will come and go, the season will have the story of itself — but that freshness, the newness, the possibility, the hope of what is to come — it's just part of the opening of every new season," Wehofer said.I-Cubs superfan Stu Bassman said he's only missed one opening day game since 1983. Despite the earlier-than-usual opening, Bassman said the weather was perfect. "When they open up in April, it can be a little cold. I've been down here in insulated hunting outfits with a blanket, so it can be bad," Bassman said. "You live in Iowa, you go through the bad weather, and you get a break in the weather like this, you've got baseball season starting. It's exciting." » Subscribe to KCCI's YouTube page» Download the free KCCI app to get updates on the go: Apple | Google Play
