Shh… this is the secret to a Mauritius holiday for under £800

Beaches, national parks and a colourful capital city are all part of this great value trip to the Indian Ocean island — the trick is to visit in May. Here’s why

Mauritius is a hugely popular winter sun destination but edges into low season by May, which means prices plummet in this expensive Indian Ocean honeymoon hotspot. Beaches are almost empty and attractions quiet, yet temperatures remain in the mid to high 20s and the sea is still gloriously swimmable. Humidity is also lower than during the winter, making May a great time to explore the island, potter around markets and head out on hiking trails.

A week at Dodola Lodge costs £727pp room-only with Expedia, departing on May 10. You’ll fly out with Saudia via Jeddah and return with Kenya Airways via Nairobi, with a 23kg checked suitcase included both ways. A private car transfer can be added for £81pp return for the hour-long journey
