A new report in The Washington Postpoints to a looming potentially perilous situation (or as the Post puts it an "an epic constitutional standoff ") for Republicans up for re-election next year.
The crux of it all will be when House Democrats soon order up, as expected, a new resolution disapproving of Trump’s emergency declaration regarding his wall, said the Post on Friday.
"The inter-party feud will come to a head in a matter of weeks, as House Democrats gear up to pass a resolution disapproving of Trump’s emergency declaration. Under congressional rules, that resolution would automatically come to the Senate for a vote in a matter of days, forcing Republicans to take a position," the report noted.
Key Republicans such as Mitch McConnell (R-KY) could be at risk, per the Post.
"'It is a recipe for disaster for McConnell and his flock of Senate Republicans up in 2020,' said Dan Eberhart, an oil industry executive and GOP donor who called the predicament a 'no-win situation.'
The post quotes Eberhart again as saying: “Choose Trump and the emergency declaration and offend moderates, or upset Trump and risk being toppled in a Trump-fueled primary challenge."
And it's not just McConnell at risk, either, according to the Post. Other Senate Republicans will have to decide if they are ok with Trump's power grab, which goes against traditional conservative values, or face a tough time explaining their backing of Trump's 'emergency' back in their respective districts.
"That could pose a problem for senators such as Thom Tillis of North Carolina, John Cornyn of Texas, Martha McSally of Arizona and Tom Cotton of Arkansas — all Republicans up for reelection next year," the Post says. "Cornyn and McSally hail from border states, where their own constituents could see the Trump administration attempting to seize property under eminent domain laws to build a border wall. Tillis represents a swing state where he needs both independents and Trump loyalists to win reelection."
